What a SOC analyst actually does all day

Alerts, tickets and handoffs: a realistic look at a Tier 1 shift, and the skills that matter most in your first 90 days.

Most job descriptions for SOC analysts list tools. The job itself is mostly judgment: deciding which of the hundreds of alerts in your queue deserve attention, and explaining that decision to the next shift.

A typical Tier 1 shift starts with a handoff. You read the open tickets, check anything escalated overnight and look at the dashboards for unusual spikes. Then the queue starts moving.

The skills that matter most early on are less glamorous than threat hunting: reading email headers, pivoting between the SIEM and the ticketing system, and writing short, clear notes that someone else can act on.

If you're preparing for interviews, practise talking through one alert from start to finish. Interviewers want to hear how you think, what you checked and why you closed or escalated it.
